E312 Welding Rod: precise all-position connection, enhanced arc stability

E312 welding rod meets AWS E312-17 specification and is the preferred solution for versatile, high-integrity manual stick arc welding (SMAW). Designed for all-position welding, the electrode excels in complex fabrication and repair conditions with changing welding directions. Its core advantage is its ability to form a strong, crack-resistant austenitic deposit on a variety of challenging base materials, including various stainless steels, dissimilar metal combinations and high-alloy steel grades, especially for conditions where thermal shock resistance is critical.

E312 electrodes use an austenitic electrode deposit characterized by a high chromium content  and a high nickel content . This special composition gives it excellent resistance to hot cracking, which is a common problem when welding highly constrained joints, dissimilar metals, or easily embrittled metals. The resulting weld metal exhibits excellent tensile strength at both room and elevated temperatures, and has good ductility and impact toughness.

E312-17 is unique in its optimized handling properties. E312 welding rod (AWS E312-17) is similar to E312-16 electrode, but its coating formulation has increased silicon content and reduced titanium content. This careful tuning significantly improves arc stability in all positions, especially in difficult overhead fillet welds and vertical up welds. This chemistry produces a unique “jet arc” effect when used in horizontal fillet welds.

The E312 electrode has an extremely wide range of applications. It is the consumable of choice for joining dissimilar metals, austenitic stainless steels to carbon or low alloy steels, and high nickel alloys to steels. It is very effective for overlay and cladding applications where wear and corrosion resistance are required. The electrode is also highly regarded in repair welding of castings prone to cracking. Key industries that rely on its performance include power generation, chemical and petrochemical processing, pulp and paper, and heavy equipment manufacturing and maintenance.

E312 welding rod (AWS E312-17) offers unmatched versatility and reliability for demanding welding jobs requiring all-position welding, excellent crack resistance and high-strength deposits. Its special coating chemistry gives it an excellent “jet arc” effect, which enables excellent horizontal fillet welds, providing the welder with better control and deposition characteristics. The resulting austenitic weld metal has excellent resistance to hot cracking and dilution, making it an essential electrode for critical connections such as dissimilar metals, high-alloy steels, and complex repair jobs.
