AWS E312-17 is all-position and very similar to 312-16 but the -17 coating contains more silica and less titani-um creating a “Spray-Arc” effect when used on horizontal fillet welds.

Description and Applications
AWS E312-17 is all-position and very similar to 312-16 but the -17 coating contains more silica and less titani- um creating a “Spray-Arc” effect when used on horizontal fillet welds. This also produces a weld deposit with a finer ripple appearance that is more flat to concave. 312-17 has a slower freezing slag giving it better handling characteristics when using a drag technique. Excellent choice on difficult-to-weld steels such as air-hardening steel, medium and high carbon steels. The perfect electrode to use where the base metal is an unknown grade of steel. Suitable for many dissimilar applications involving manganese-hardening steel, armor steel, spring steel, rail steel, nickel clad steel, tool & die steel and aircraft steel. Commonly used as a wear-resistant build-up and “buffer” layer in hard-facing applications. Work hardens up to 200 Brinell. 312-17 has the highest tensile and yield strength of the standard stainless steel coated electrodes (duplex stainless not included).
