1. Description & Applications
ERCoCr-B (commonly known as Cobalt Alloy 1 / Stellite 1 equivalent) is a high-carbon, high-alloy cobalt-based hardfacing material designed to provide exceptional resistance to extreme abrasion, severe impact-free erosion, high-temperature wear, and metal-to-metal friction. Compared to ERCoCr-A, ERCoCr-B contains a higher volume of hard complex carbides, resulting in superior hardness and abrasion resistance at elevated temperatures up to 800°C (1472°F).
Key Applications:
-
Expeller screws, agricultural shredders, and mixing blades
-
Steel mill guide rolls and hot piercing plugs
-
Coal pulverizer components and cement screw conveyors
-
High-wear valve seats and components exposed to severe abrasive slurry or particle erosion
2. Nominal Chemical Composition (wt%)
| Element | C | Cr | W | Fe | Ni | Si | Mn | Co |
| Min (%) | 1.70 | 28.00 | 3.50 | — | — | — | — | Bal. |
| Max (%) | 2.50 | 33.00 | 5.50 | 3.00 | 3.00 | 2.00 | 2.00 | Balance |
3. Mechanical & Deposit Properties (As-Welded)
-
Hardness (As-Welded): 45 – 53 HRC (single or multi-layer deposit)
-
High-Temperature Hardness: Maintains outstanding hardness and wear resistance up to 650°C (1200°F)
-
Deposit Structure: Austenite matrix densely packed with primary chromium-tungsten carbides
-
Machinability: Difficult to machine due to high hardness; requires grinding for final dimensional tolerance and finishing
4. Recommended Welding Parameters
A. GTAW (TIG Welding)
-
Shielding Gas: 100% Argon (Pure Ar), Flow rate: 8–15 L/min
-
Current Type: DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative)
B. Oxy-Acetylene Welding (OAW)
-
Flame Type: Slightly reducing flame (2x feather) to prevent oxidation and ensure clean carbide precipitation.
