ERCoCr-C Cobalt-Based Hardfacing Bare Rod / Welding Wire

Short Description:

1. Description & Applications

ERCoCr-C (commonly known as Cobalt Alloy 12 / Stellite 12 equivalent) is a medium-carbon cobalt-based hardfacing alloy that bridges the gap between ERCoCr-A (Stellite 6) and ERCoCr-B (Stellite 1). It offers a balance of higher wear and abrasion resistance than ERCoCr-A, combined with greater impact resistance and toughness than ERCoCr-B. It performs exceptionally well under severe metal-to-metal wear, high-temperature oxidation, and particle erosion up to 800°C (1472°F).

Key Applications:

  • Saw blades for wood, particle board, and paper cutting

  • Shear blades, hot trimming dies, and forging tools

  • Extrusion screws and mixing paddles in the plastics and chemical industries

  • High-pressure valve seats, disks, and steam turbine components

2. Nominal Chemical Composition (wt%)

Element C Cr W Fe Ni Si Mn Co
Min (%) 1.20 27.00 7.00 — — — — Bal.
Max (%) 1.70 31.00 9.00 3.00 3.00 2.00 2.00 Balance

3. Mechanical & Deposit Properties (As-Welded)

  • Hardness (As-Welded): 43 – 49 HRC (single or multi-layer deposit)

  • High-Temperature Hardness: Excellent retention of hardness and strength at elevated temperatures up to 650°C (1200°F)

  • Deposit Structure: Austenitic matrix reinforced with evenly distributed chromium and tungsten primary carbides

  • Machinability: Difficult to machine due to high hardness; finishing is best accomplished by grinding with carbide or CBN tooling

4. Recommended Welding Parameters

A. GTAW (TIG Welding)

  • Shielding Gas: 100% Argon (Pure Ar), Flow rate: 8–15 L/min

  • Current Type: DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative)

B. Oxy-Acetylene Welding (OAW)

  • Flame Type: Slightly reducing neutral-to-carburizing flame (2x feather) to prevent oxidation during deposition.
