1. Description & Applications

ER310 is an austenitic stainless steel solid wire/rod designed for MIG (GMAW) and TIG (GTAW) welding, formulated specifically for high-temperature and heat-resistant applications.

  • High Chromium and Nickel (25Cr-20Ni): Provides exceptional resistance to scaling and oxidation at elevated temperatures up to 1050°C – 1100°C.
  • Heat & Corrosion Resistance: Excellent performance in aggressive chemical environments and high-temperature sulfur-free atmospheres.
  • Key Applications:
    • Heat-treating fixtures, furnace parts, burner nozzles, and radiant tubes.
    • Petrochemical furnace components and high-temperature piping.
    • Welding of similar composition stainless steels (such as AISI 310, 310S).

2. Classification & International Standards

  • AWS A5.9 / ASME SFA-5.9: ER310
  • EN ISO 14343-A: G 25 20 / W 25 20
  • GB/T 17854: H0Cr25Ni20

5. Temperature & Corrosion Resistance

Item Value
Oxidation scaling temperature (sulfur-free atmosphere) up to 1150°C
Oxidizing combustion gases (sulfur-free) up to 1100°C
Reducing combustion gases (sulfur-free) up to 1040°C
Corrosion resistance Moderate in wet corrosion
Caution Avoid service in the 650-900°C range due to embrittlement risk

6. Main Applications

  • High-temperature furnace components: industrial furnaces, heat treatment furnaces, annealing furnaces
  • Boilers and heat exchangers: steam boiler components, heat exchanger tubing
  • Heat-resistant steel castings/forgings: welding and repair of Cr25Ni20-type heat-resistant stainless steels
  • Dissimilar steel welding: general-purpose filler metal for unknown stainless steel grades
  • Buffer layers for hardfacing: transition layer for thick-section Cr steel and cast steel components intended for sulfur-containing atmospheres

7. Usage Notes

  1. Heat input control: The weld metal is fully austenitic and sensitive to hot cracking; maintain minimum heat input, recommended not exceeding 1.0 kJ/mm .
  2. Interpass temperature: Recommended ≤100°C .
  3. Preheat and post-weld heat treatment: Generally not required .
  4. Pre-weld cleaning: Thoroughly remove rust, moisture, oil, and contaminants from the weld area .
  5. Wind protection: Use shielding when wind speed exceeds 1.5 m/s .
  6. Wire extension: Recommended 15-25 mm .
  7. Temperature range to avoid: Embrittlement risk exists in the 650-900°C range; design should avoid this range .
